What we collect now
- Waitlist. If you join the waitlist we store your email address and the date. We use it only to tell you when UnlockIR launches. We keep it until then and delete it on request.
- Server logs. Our web host records basic request information, such as IP address and pages requested, for security and reliability. This website does not use advertising or analytics cookies.
The converter and free trial
When you use the online converter we handle the following.
- Your images and the converted files. We store them in Amazon Web Services (AWS) in London, in a private store that only our conversion service can reach. They are deleted automatically, normally within 24 hours and always within 48 hours. You can delete them yourself at any time with the "Delete my files now" button. We use them only to convert your images and give you the result. Thermal images can contain GPS positions and camera serial numbers; this information is part of the files and we do not use it for anything else.
- Your email address. You enter it to claim your free trial (8 thermal images per email address and per camera). We send a one-time code to that address to confirm it is yours, using Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES, London). The code is not stored in readable form and expires in 10 minutes. To count your free images we use a one-way hash of the address. We also keep the address itself with your account details (next item) so that we can contact you. If you also join the waitlist, that is a separate record, described above.
- Your account details. We keep your email address, your first and last name if you chose to give them (optional), the time you last confirmed your email, how many free images and credits you have, and whether you asked to receive offers. We use this to keep your credits against the right account, to contact you about your conversions (for example if an image fails, or when we add credits for you) and to help if you contact us. These are service messages and do not need your consent. We send marketing, such as offers of more credits or product news, only if you ticked the box asking for it, and you can stop at any time by emailing us or by un-ticking it the next time you confirm your email. We keep these details while your account is in use, and we delete them when you ask. Our staff can see them in an admin area that requires a personal login with a second factor, and every access is logged. You can ask us to see or delete your details at any time; deleting them leaves any credits you hold in place.
- Camera serial number. Each thermal image records the serial number of the camera that took it. To count the free allowance per camera, we store a one-way hash of that serial number. We do not store the readable serial for this purpose.
- Failed conversions. You are only charged for images that convert successfully. An image that fails does not use up a free image or a credit.
- Network address. We store a one-way hash of your IP address for a short time to limit how many jobs one network can start, and in the activity log below.
- Activity log. To keep the service secure, fair and working, we record each action: when a job was created, started and finished, the number and size of files, the options chosen, any errors, and the hashed email and network address. The log does not contain your images. We keep it for up to 13 months. Our own staff sign-ins are also logged, including the staff member's email address.
- Usage totals. We keep daily totals, such as the number of conversions, so we can run and plan the service.
- Your browser. The converter remembers the email, name and options you used last time in your browser's local storage, on your device only. Clear your browser data to remove them. We do not use advertising or analytics cookies.
We use these for providing the service you asked for, and for our legitimate interests in security, preventing abuse and running the service. We do not sell your data or use your images to train anything.
Who processes your data
Amazon Web Services (AWS) processes uploaded files and logs for us in its London data centres (eu-west-2), and sends the one-time email codes through Amazon SES in London. Our web host, Hostinger, runs this website and the waitlist. Staff sign-ins use AWS's sign-in service.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or delete the personal data we hold about you at unlockir@leapingwing.co.uk. You may also complain to the data protection authority in your country; in the UK that is the Information Commissioner's Office.
